  Later (Stephen King)

  This was my first time reading anything by Stephen King and I enjoyed it enough that I will be trying out some of his other books when I get the chance. Whilst I enjoyed this book though it felt like a short story that was stretched out into a small novel and the characters felt like they were lacking development. This is pegged as a horror (as the protagonist will continually remind you) but I never really got that feeling at any point of the book. The ending was rather abrupt and a little odd, though I have been made aware that this is on the tame side of King's weirdness.

  Godkiller (Hannah Kaner)

  Godkiller is definitely a book I bought because of the cover and, as I had hoped, the book started strong and I was flying through the pages. The characters introduced early on were getting some good development, the world seemed interesting enough and I liked the whole setup. At some point however, things slowed down and it felt like a real slog getting through the midsection, I'm not sure where things went wrong, but I struggled. Characters that I didn't care for were introduced and soon dispatched of and I managed to confuse two characters for the whole book. Even in this dire stretch there were flickers of light where I found myself interested again but they were sparse. Heading into the final acts, it was like Kaner flicked a switch and things got interesting again - I flew through the last 50 or so pages and felt a genuine interest that had been missing since the setup of the story. As the book ended, I felt myself wanting to read more and wishing that the whole book could have hit the mark like the start and end. My rating is probably skewed by a strong finish, I don't have any plans to continue with this series for now.
